Why can't there be any financial rewards?

Just because you've uploaded it here means you can kiss it goodbye as far as taking it to festivals.

Case in point, I wasn't going to bring it up NOW, but it does look like my "How Do You Don't" film (which made it's debut here) will be playing at one of the largest experimental film festivals in Europe, The Lausanne Underground Film Festival in Switzerland in October.

It seems to me that if a film can be downloaded in its entirety for free in a format that allows for good video quality, it's less likely to be sold later. There's always the chance that festival exposure could lead to more work, I guess.

Jason Wen's excellent short F8 was posted complete - by mistake - in the Siggraph section of the Archives last year. That mistake was fixed in a hurry, and it was replaced by a short preview excerpt. F8 has some kind of distribution deal, and the people who control that apparently didn't want the whole F8 to be available for free. It was even broken into two parts when aired on TechTV's EYE DROPS.
